Abbott recalls two more infected import lots in milk scare

The Vietnamese representative office of Abbott and the distributor of its products in the country announced Wednesday that they are recalling two more import lots of Similac baby formula amid the tainted milk scare.

The infected product is Similac GainPlus Eye-Q 3 for children aged 1 to 3, stored in 1.7-kg cans and in import lot numbers 2563G53117 and 2576G53117.

According to the local Abbott representative there are 4,387 cartons of this product in total.

Previously the company recalled products from nine import lots in Vietnam under suspicion that they had been tainted with clostridium botulinum, a bacteria linked to botulism that was found in the whey protein concentrate used to produce the milk.

According to Abbott, the two latest lots were added to the recall list because it is feared that they have been contaminated with the toxic substance even though there is no whey protein concentrate in their formula.

The suspicion derived from the fact that the said products are packed by the same machinery that was used for those containing whey protein concentrate, the company said, citing the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries.
