VN ups seafood exports to US

The nation ranked fifth in the list of top seafood exporters to the US market last year, according to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Vietnamese seafood accounted for nearly 7 per cent of the US market’s total seafood import value and over 8 per cent of volume.

Of Viet Nam’s key export items to the US, salmon trout saw the highest value growth at 88 per cent.

However, shrimp saw a decrease of 14 per cent but remained the most valuable export.

Meanwhile, the volume of tra and basa fish showed a year-on year increase of 17 per cent.

In 2012, the US imported seafood worth US$16.8 billion from 130 countries around the world. Among them, Viet Nam ranks behind China, Canada, Thailand and Indonesia.
