Shares fall as blue chips tumble

Shares failed to retain gains during this morning's session. After a positive rally yesterday, the VN-Index on the HCM City Stock Exchange lost 0.24 per cent to 401.12 points.

Of the 30 leading shares tracked by the VN30, only food processor Bourbon Tay Ninh (SBT) reached its ceiling price of VND16,500 per share. In addition, seven other stocks managed to add value.

However, the majority of blue chips tumbled. The VN30 retreated 0.2 per cent to 471.83 points.

The overall ratio between losers and gainers in the southern city was 3 to 1.

Around 32.4 million shares worth VND478.4 billion (US$22.7 million) changed hands.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index reached 61.14 points, falling 0.8 per cent. The HNX30, representing the exchange's top shares, dropped more than 1.7 per cent to just 114.39 points.

Market value and volume fetched VND209.57 billion ($9.9 million) and 22.1 million shares, respectively.

Brokerages halted the suspension of margin trading on shares of Asian Commercial Bank (ACB) along with two bank stocks on the HCM City Stock Exchange – Eximbank (EIB) and Sacombank (STB).

ACB and STB finished this morning up 0.5 per cent, while EIB shed 0.6 per cent.

The two bourses will reopen at 1 pm
