Penny-chip stocks lift market

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index rose for a second day on July 12 thanks to support from penny-chip stocks.

Shares of 301 companies and six mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange bounced 0.35 percent, or 1.44 points, to close at 408.72 points.

Among the index members, 162 edged up, 84 slipped, while 61 remained unchanged.

Trading on the city bourse improved by nearly 91.3 percent in volume, and by 96 percent in value over the previous trading session as more than 43.56 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND661.01 billion.

Tan Tao Investment Industrial Joint Stock Company (ITA) led the list of most active shares in volume with 2.1 million shares changing hands.

Vietnam Electricity Construction Joint Stock Corporation (VNE) followed with 1.37 million shares.

Saigon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) came in third with 1.23 million shares traded.

Interfood Shareholding Company (IFS), Sucrerie De Bourbon Tay Ninh (SBT), and Ca Mau Frozen Seafood Processing Import Export Corporation (CMX) jumped 5 percent to close at VND6,300, VND16,800, and VND4,200 respectively.

Kinh Bac City Development Share Holding Corporation (KBC) and Vegetable Oil Packing Joint Stock Company (VPK) both leaped forward 4.95 percent to close at VND10,600.

Lao Cai Mineral Exploitation & Processing Joint Stock Company (LCM) escalated for three straight trading sessions, gaining 4.86 percent to close at VND19,400.

Duc Thanh Wood Processing Joint Stock Company (GDT) extended its losing streak to six consecutive days, eroding 4.96 percent to close at VND13,400.

Saigon Telecommunication & Technologies Corporation (SGT) diminished 4.92 percent to close at VND5,800.

Binh Thanh Import - Export Production & Trade Joint Stock Company (GIL) curbed its five-day winning streak, reducing 4.8 percent to close at VND39,700.

The VN30 Index - a free-float adjusted, market cap-weighted index of 30 stocks with the highest market value and liquidity on the exchange – mounted 1.55 points, or 0.32 percent, to end at 483.12. Among its 30 members, 18 stocks rallied, 3 weakened, and 9 remained unmoved.

Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north rocketed 1.06 percent, or 0.73 points, to close at 69.32 points with 180 winners, 51 losers, and 50 stocks treading water. Around 34.5 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND294.74 billion.

HNX 30 Index - the price index of top 30 stocks calculated based on free float adjusted market capitalization – levitated 2.06 percent, or 2.65 points, to finish at 130.92 points.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares cut 0.58 percent, or 0.21 points, to close at 36.29 points. A total of 345,157 shares changed hands at VND2.78 billion.
