Cần Thơ City is weighing plans for a sprawling free trade zone of about 2,000–5,000 hectares as it looks to sharpen its edge in regional and global commerce and lure strategic investors with flexible and preferential policies.
The proposed Cần Thơ Free Trade Zone could be sited near Cần Thơ Airport or within the Trần Đề Economic Zone, linked to a deep-water port to boost logistics, international trade and modern financial and commercial services.
If approved, the zone is expected to emerge as a key transhipment hub for the Mekong Delta, strengthening the city’s role in regional and international trade networks.
The People’s Committee of Cần Thơ City recently issued a decision approving adjustments to the city’s master plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
Under the decision, Cần Thơ’s industrial, commercial and service development space will be restructured towards a more concentrated and modern model, closely connected to the region’s seaport, airport and logistics systems.
In particular, the Trần Đề Economic Zone is planned to cover more than 40,000 hectares in sync with the Trần Đề seaport.
The area is expected not only to function as a major trade hub but also to become a new growth pole, playing a leading role in the city’s development in the coming period.
By 2030, Cần Thơ is projected to have one economic zone, 40 industrial parks and 46 industrial clusters.
These will prioritise industries such as agro–aquatic product processing, supporting industries, energy equipment, electronics and other high-value-added sectors.
At the same time, the city plans to develop 27 additional industrial parks to create more space for domestic and foreign investment.
Cần Thơ’s footprint expanded significantly after its merger with Sóc Trăng and Hậu Giang provinces on July 1 last year, lifting its total area to 6,360.8 square kilometres and making it Việt Nam’s third-largest city.
