Leaders of Cần Thơ City held a working session with a delegation from Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation during the group’s visit to survey investment opportunities and explore potential cooperation on Tuesday.
At the meeting, city leaders affirmed their commitment to create the most favourable conditions for Sumitomo to study and effectively implement investment projects, particularly in its areas of strength such as industrial park infrastructure, green energy, and smart urban development.
Speaking at the meeting, Eita Fujikawa, general director of Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam LLC, said Sumitomo was highly interested in high value-added industries and green energy sectors in which the group believed it could make positive contributions to Việt Nam’s economic development in the coming period.
Sharing the group’s operational experience, he noted that Sumitomo was currently operating three industrial parks in Việt Nam, preparing to break ground on a fourth, and has one additional joint-venture industrial park, bringing the total to five projects.
However, most of its existing investment portfolio is concentrated in northern Việt Nam.
Therefore, this working visit presents a valuable opportunity for the group to study the expansion of its industrial park infrastructure investments in the southern region, particularly in Cần Thơ City.
Addressing the meeting, Chairman of the municipal people’s committee Trương Cảnh Tuyên affirmed that the city was always ready to welcome leading Japanese economic groups.
Introducing the city’s potential, he said the city covered a natural area of more than 6,360 square kilometres and has a population of over 4.2 million.
As the economic, cultural, and science-and-technology hub of the Mekong Delta, the city enjoys a strategic position in terms of transportation, logistics, and regional connectivity.
Cooperation between Cần Thơ and Japan had yielded tangible results by the end of last year, with 13 FDI projects totaling approximately US$1.65 billion.
The city’s exports to Japan reached $282.9 million last year, with key products including high-quality rice, seafood, and garments.
