Viettel begins training engineers for Việt Nam’s first chip plant

Viettel Group has launched a specialised semiconductor training programme in collaboration with the VNU University of Science, marking a foundational step in preparing the workforce for Việt Nam’s first high-tech chip fabrication plant.
The project, assigned by the Government to the Ministry of National Defence and Viettel, is expected to play a pivotal role in the country’s ambition to master core technologies.
The inaugural course brings together 20 engineers from the fabrication division of the Viettel Semiconductor Institute.
Over nearly 300 hours of training, participants will be equipped with in-depth knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing technologies, clean-room operations and hands-on practice with industry-standard processes.
The curriculum is designed to ensure learners gain both solid theoretical grounding and practical skills on modern equipment currently used across the global semiconductor industry.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Viettel Deputy General Director Nguyễn Vũ Hà said that building Việt Nam’s first chip fabrication plant represents more than a technological milestone — it embodies a national aspiration to take ownership of critical technologies.
“The establishment of the first semiconductor factory will help Việt Nam narrow the gap between laboratory research and real-world applications, enabling scientists, start-ups and technology enterprises to turn ideas into products and transform research outcomes into tangible contributions for the country,” he said.
“It will also cultivate a semiconductor ecosystem where Vietnamese engineers can be trained, mature professionally and continue developing the next generations of talent.”
Hà emphasised that human capital remains Viettel’s decisive factor for progress. Partnering with the University of Science — an institution known for its strong foundation in fundamental sciences, modern clean-room facilities and experienced experts — represents a strategic first step towards building a core team of engineers capable of operating and mastering future chip manufacturing lines.
University representatives noted the close collaboration between the two sides in designing the course content and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Viettel in standardising training and advancing research for the semiconductor sector, a strategic field prioritised for national development.
The university described the programme as a model for effective cooperation between enterprises and academic institutions, contributing directly to Việt Nam’s National Semiconductor Workforce Development Programme.
Representing the trainees, Dr Hà Dương Long said the course not only offers an opportunity to deepen professional expertise and accumulate hands-on experience, but also carries a sense of responsibility.
“We are aware that this training is part of a broader mission to help Việt Nam master semiconductor manufacturing technologies and strengthen the country’s supply chain capabilities in the years to come,” he added.
The launch of the training programme demonstrates Viettel’s concrete commitment to developing skilled workers as it prepares for the implementation of Việt Nam’s first advanced semiconductor fabrication plant once the project receives official approval.
It also marks an important contribution to shaping a domestic semiconductor ecosystem, laying the foundation for the country to build strategic technological autonomy in the new development phase.
