Liên Chiểu container port investment proposal accepted

Đà Nẵng is charting a bold course into the future of logistics with approval of the Liên Chiểu deep-sea container port project, a collaboration between local Hateco Group and the Netherlands’ APM Terminals. The ambitious plan, spanning from the fourth quarter of 2025 to the first quarter of 2036, aims to transform the central city into a major regional hub

The city said the proposal had been submitted to the Ministry of Finance in May, and a pre-feasibility study on the project was reported in August.

The master plan includes eight container berths capable of handling ships with a capacity of 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The port will cover 172.6ha of land and 25.76ha of water, with an investment of VNĐ45.26 trillion (US$1.76 billion).

In the first phase, two berths along with logistics, inner railway traffic and technical infrastructure sections will be operational from the fourth quarter of 2028. A 1.5km railway system connecting the port to Kim Liên cargo railway station is also part of the construction plan.

The port is designed to receive 5.7 million TEUs, equivalent to 74 million tonnes of cargo per year. Last month, the city’s Management Unit of Priority Infrastructure Projects reported completion of a 1.17km water breaker dyke system and dredging of a 7.3km shipping lane.

Liên Chiểu Port will serve as the main logistics centre for the north-south railway and road systems and the East-West Economic Corridor No 2 connecting Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Việt Nam via the Đà Nẵng port system. It is projected to handle 40–50 million tonnes of cargo by 2050.

Designed as an international gateway and a logistics hub for Việt Nam, ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region, Liên Chiểu will be a key entry point to the East Sea from the sub-Mekong region.
