Tetra Pak reports 25 per cent greenhouse gas reduction

Tetra Pak, a world leading food processing and packaging solutions company, said it has reached a 25 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across its value chain compared to 2019 levels, including a 5 per cent improvement since 2023.

In its recently-released Sustainability Report for FY2024, the company highlighted that within its own operations, it has achieved a 54 per cent emissions reduction while increasing its use of renewable energy to 94 per cent, staying firmly on track to reach net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2030.

These environmental milestones are closely tied to Tetra Pak’s broader commitment to enhancing global food access, improving livelihoods, and fostering sustainable economic development through safe food supply globally.

Adolfo Orive, president and CEO of Tetra Pak, said: "By 2050, the global population is expected to reach 10 billion, driving a projected 60 per cent increase in food demand. The global food system plays a vital role in sustaining modern life, while at the same time being responsible for more than one-third of total greenhouse gas emissions. This inherent contradiction – the need to produce more food while reducing environmental impact – is one of the greatest challenges of our time. At Tetra Pak, we are committed to being part of the solution. As highlighted in our latest Sustainability Report, we are working to build safer, more sustainable food systems that reduce climate impact and enhance livelihoods.”

The 2024 report highlights the company’s steady progress toward its goal of cutting GHG emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by 46 per cent by 2030 compared to a 2019 baseline. The company not only reduces emissions from its own operations but also supports customers through advanced equipment, technology, and service solutions.

A key enabler of the 2024 emissions reduction was Tetra Pak’s continued investment in resource-efficient equipment, optimisation technologies at factory, and low-carbon packaging innovations. These solutions are designed to help food and beverage producers reduce their emissions without compromising quality or competitiveness.

In Việt Nam, Tetra Pak continues to drive innovation to support the sustainable development of the food and beverage industry and local communities.

Tetra Pak is actively advancing initiatives for used beverage cartons through comprehensive collection and recycling efforts. With a nationwide network of recycling partners and community collection points, the company helps transform used cartons into new, valuable products. Additionally, Tetra Pak collaborates with relevant organisations to implement a cooperative model that supports street waste collectors—enabling them to increase their income, register for legal residence, and access social security and healthcare benefits

Furthermore, since its launch in 2019, the Tetra Pak Bình Dương aseptic packaging plant has made significant environmental progress. Between 2020 and 2024, the factory improved energy efficiency by 13 per cent, reused more than 5 million litres of water annually, maintained a waste-to-landfill rate below 3 per cent, and powered 5 per cent of its operations with solar energy from 5,900sq.m of solar panels.
