Rapidus to assist training in Vietnam's semiconductor industry

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung met with Higashi Tetsuro, chairman of the Board of Directors at Rapidus Corporation, in Japan on May 28 to update the chipmaker's executives on developments in Vietnam's semiconductor industry.

The DPM is paying a working visit to Japan from May 27 – June 1 to attend the 30th Nikkei Future of Asia Forum.

"Vietnam has issued a development strategy and established the National Steering Committee for Semiconductor Industry Development. The government is also implementing many solutions to develop the semiconductor industry ecosystem, such as establishing an investment support fund, an initiative to train 50,000 semiconductor engineers, attracting foreign investment, and encouraging public-private and private-private partnerships," said DPM Dung.

The DPM went on to suggest a collaboration between Rapidus and the Vietnamese government to train Vietnamese engineers, with the Japanese firm potentially hosting Vietnamese engineers to study and work at Rapidus and its partners' factories.

"Rapidus can expand research and development and other business activities in Vietnam to take advantage of incentive policies while contributing to the development of Vietnam's tech ecosystem. The government would also be open to proposed policy innovations from Rapidus that could accelerate Vietnam's semiconductor industry growth," he added.

Tetsuro said, "Rapidus is willing to engage in workforce training for Vietnam's semiconductor industry. The group will research and propose support mechanisms through the Vietnam Japan University."

Rapidus is a semiconductor manufacturing consortium established in 2022 with a view to revitalising and developing the Japan's semiconductor industry. The consortium receives support from the Japanese government and major corporations such as Toyota, Sony, NTT, SoftBank, NEC, MUFG Bank, Denso, and Kioxia.

The corporation aims to develop and manufacture the world’s most advanced logic semiconductors for AI, supercomputers, and smart cars, with an ambitious timetable to create the world’s first mass production of the next-generation semiconductors by 2027.

Tetsuro has consistently highlighted Vietnam's strategic role in developing semiconductor talent for Japan, particularly to support Rapidus' advanced chip manufacturing ambitions.
