EVN asks to take charge of new energy projects

Vietnam Electricity (EVN) estimates that with the GDP growth target of 8 per cent this year, electricity generation must grow by a factor of 1.5.

Director of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) Nguyễn Anh Tuấn has said the corporation would like to remain the investor of new energy projects, including nuclear power plants in Ninh Thuận Province.

He made the statement at the year-end review conference of EVN, held in Hà Nội on Monday.

As nuclear power is a stable, environmentally-friendly and sustainable energy source, developing this energy will diversify Việt Nam’s energy supply, according to Tuấn, ensuring energy security and contributing to achieveing the carbon neutrality target by 2050.

In Directive 01, issued on January 3, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính instructed the Minister of Industry and Trade to oversee the implementation and completion of the Ninh Thuận nuclear power plants within five years.

With the GDP growth target of 8 per cent this year, electricity generation must increase by one and a half times, meaning an additional 8,000–10,000 megawatts (MW) must be added to the national electricity system, Tuấn said.

"Therefore, EVN proposes that the Prime Minister continue to assign the corporation as the main investor in new power generation projects, alongside the Ninh Thuận nuclear plants,” he said.

“We also requests support from the Prime Minister, ministries and local authorities to expedite urgent projects, shorten preparation and construction times, and quickly increase electricity supply to the northern region."

The locations for the Ninh Thuận 1 and 2 nuclear power plants have been decided. They will, after careful surveys and evaluations, be in the Phước Dinh and Vĩnh Hải communes, Tuấn added.
