MoC mulls promoting key products in global markets

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) will promote products, including those with geographical indications made in Cambodia to enhance their recognition both locally and internationally, said a top official from the ministry.

The MoC will collaborate with major private sectors to earmark ten potential products that are gaining traction in key global markets. This initiative aligns with the strategic direction of harnessing the country’s food production potential.

Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and spokesperson for the MoC, revealed these plans during a presser on Monday. Addressing the upcoming Cambodia Trade Expo 2024, scheduled to take place from December 13-16 at the PH Center’s French Hall in Borey Peng Huot in the capital, he said, “We aim to promote products, including those with geographical indications and those made in Cambodia, to enhance their recognition both locally and internationally.”

Prime Minister Hun Manet will preside over the Cambodia Trade Expo 2024.

The ten featured products include paddy rice, cashews, pepper, mangoes, yellow bananas, Pailin longan, cassava, honey, salt, and coconuts. Some of these items are registered as geographical indications (GIs), while others are emerging products currently appealing to the market.

Sovicheat went on to add that this means Cambodia is moving away from relying only on imported goods, gradually replacing them with locally produced items to support small and medium enterprises, empower local producers, and encourage people to recognise and appreciate the quality, packaging, and appeal of ‘Made in Cambodia’ products.

Highlighting specific examples, Sovicheat noted that Cambodian rice has recently has been selected once again as the ‘World’s Best Rice’, the recognition it has achieved multiple times. Similarly, cashew nuts and cassava are recognised as high-quality products that have attracted significant interest from international buyers.

“For all these products, the Royal Government, particularly the Ministry of Commerce, has prepared a campaign to boost production volume, ensure quality standards, and promote processing to export finished products,” Sovicheat said.

He also said that the National Cashew Policy and the National Cassava Policy will further support these key economic contributors and enhance exports.

Other products are designed to attract the European market and other markets in neighbouring countries.

“All of these products have been actively supported and promoted by the Ministry of Commerce through policy initiatives, the establishment of associations, and efforts to enhance product development, including improved packaging, quality standards, and proper labelling to attract consumers and meet market demands,” Sovicheat said.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce, the Cambodia Trade Exhibition (CTE) plans to feature 246 booths for both domestic and international traders.

Over 50,000 visitors, including senior government officials, development partners, national and international attendees, as well as the general public, particularly buyers and distributors from various countries are expected to take part in the four-day trade fair.
