PM Chinh, along with his entourage, will participate in these events in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China from November 5 to 8, at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Li Qiang.
The GMS Summit is an important conference that promotes economic cooperation and sustainable development in the region.
Attendees come from the six countries sharing the Mekong River, including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and China, specifically Yunnan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
In 1992, with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), these six countries entered the GMS Economic Cooperation Program, designed to enhance economic relations among the countries in the region.
Since 2022, with support from the ADB and other donors, the program has mobilized over US$21 billion to support the implementation of high-priority regional projects in agriculture, energy, environment, health, human resource development, information and communication technology, tourism, transport, transport and trade facilitation, and urban development, according to the GMS website.
These projects serve the development of different economic corridors of the GMS, including the North-South Economic Corridor, the East-West Economic Corridor, and the Southern Economic Corridor.
This year, besides the GMS Summit, PM Chinh will also attend the 10th Ayeyawady - Chao Phraya - Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Summit and the 11th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Cooperation Summit, along with other working sessions.
The ACMECS, also known as the Economic Cooperation Strategy, is an economic cooperation framework consisting of five countries, namely Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, under the overarching goal of ensuring peace, stability and common prosperity.
ACMECS is meant to boost competitiveness and stimulate economic growth in border areas of member countries.
It focuses on expanding cooperation in agriculture and industry, creating more job opportunities, and reducing income disparities.
These objectives are central to fostering a more integrated and prosperous region.
