CanCham prioritises promoting Cambodia’s economic growth
Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (CanCham) Thursday organised a casual gathering between board members of 12 different chambers of commerce to deliberate about the shared commitment to promoting economic growth and fostering collaboration among businesses and nationalities throughout the Kingdom.
The ‘CanCham Board Meet & Greet’ was presided over by Bunleng Men, Trade Commissioner of the Embassy of Canada to Cambodia and Emily Yu, Chairwoman of CanCham in Phnom Penh.
Yein Ngo, Vice Chairwoman of CanCham and Denis Barre, Secretary and Treasurer of CanCham were also present on the occasion.
Trade Commissioner Men said that Canada is now engaged across Southeast Asia countries by establishing a trade representative based in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“I met the representative last week during his first visit to Cambodia, discussing the possibility of engaging in agri-food and agro-processing,” he said, adding, that all these proved that the Government of Canada intended to boost trade with the Kingdom.
Men further said that Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada will pay a courtesy visit to Cham Nimul, Minister of Commerce (MoC) during the 56th ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting (AEM) in Vientiane, Capital of Lao PDR.
Elaborating on the purpose of the ‘CanCham Board Meet and Greet’, Yu said the event is to gather various leaders across all chambers in Cambodia to emphasise our mutual commitment to fostering economic growth and collaboration between all nationalities and businesses in Cambodia.
“CanCham is excited to strengthen our ties with each of the chambers as we believe that by working collaboratively, we can create an ecosystem that not only benefits our businesses but also enhance the visibility of Canadians and friends of Canada here in the Kingdom.”
“Also, as CanCham reactivates after a hiatus, the purpose of the gathering is to introduce the new Board and encourage open dialogue and communication,” the CanCham Chairwoman added.
Yu said that in 2023, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) and the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) ranked Canada as the third largest foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow, accounting for 9.5 percent of the total FDI in the Kingdom.
Andrew Tay, President of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, Dalton Wong, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Wiu Kai Shen, Executive Assistant to Chairman of Masswork Co Ltd and Cho Jae Yong, Managing Director of Hyundai Agro (Cambodia) Co Ltd, were also present on the occasion.
Based on the MoC announcement, Nimul and Mary exchanged views on enhancing ASEAN-Canada cooperation, focusing on the negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement. Both also discussed ways to strengthen economic and trade cooperation, financial services and women’s entrepreneurship.
According to CanCham, the organisation is committed to fostering a business community where diversity is valued and everyone is welcome, providing a professional platform for networking, knowledge sharing and business growth.
