Of this total, individuals and household businesses make up 72 percent, or approximately 64,800, while the remaining 28 percent, nearly 25,400, are enterprises.
The Ho Chi Minh City Tax Department has adopted various tax management measures due to the high number of online traders in the city.
The department has undertaken several actions, including reviewing and updating e-commerce data, urging e-commerce platform owners to provide information about online traders, inspecting enterprises involved in online business, and tightening the management of broadcasting, communications, and content creation on online platforms and live streams on social media.
In the first half of this year, the department developed an e-commerce database for tax management, as requested by the municipal government.
This database includes statistics from the last quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of this year, gathered from 159 e-commerce platforms, 158 websites, and 145 apps.
The department reviewed and handled tax issues for around 7,100 taxpayers, including nearly 2,200 enterprises and 4,900 household businesses and individuals.
It supported taxpayers in declaring and paying taxes totaling VND1.3 trillion (US$51.2 million), while collecting VND72 billion ($2.8 million) in tax arrears and fines from 1,300 taxpayers.

Vietnam has the highest proportion of population shopping online among Southeast Asian countries, at 41 percent or 49.3 million people.
Total sales on the five largest e-commerce platforms in Vietnam, including Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, Sendo, and TikTok Shop, reached VND71.2 trillion ($2.8 billion) in the first quarter of this year, surging 78.69 percent year on year, according to a report by e-commerce data platform Metric.
The figure far exceeded previous forecasts.
Up to over 766 million products were sold through the five e-commerce platforms in the period, soaring 83.21 percent over the year-ago period.
The five e-commerce platforms’ total revenue was expected to hit VND84.87 trillion ($3.3 billion) this quarter with 882.12 million products to be sold, up 19.2 and 13.57 percent, respectively, against last quarter.
A boom in e-commerce has presented challenges for management agencies in overseeing tax sources and taxpayers.
