Ben Thanh Market marchants learn to go digital

Forty students from universities in Ho Chi Minh City on Monday rushed to Ben Thanh Market in District 1 to instruct local traders to sell products on TikTok Shop, one of the major e-commerce sites in Vietnam, firing them with online sales.

This activity was part of the Ho Chi Minh City Shoppertainment 2023 - Ben Thanh Heritage Market program held between Monday and Saturday this week.

As a long-serving fabric merchant at the iconic Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Thi Ngoc said that she has the intention of shifting to online sales, but her age has discouraged her plan.

After being instructed by some students, Ngoc was energized, saying, “I asked for their phone numbers so that I could seek further support.”

She lamented that revenue from her stall has fallen post-pandemic.

Ngoc expects her sales to improve after opening an online shop on TikTok.

Similarly, Tran Thi Minh Ky, a trader of clothes at the market, decided to run an online shop on TikTok, apart from maintaining her store at the marketplace, after being introduced to the popular e-commerce site.

Ky said that she had never sold goods online before.

“I hope that after opening an online store, sales will increase,” she added.

Many volunteer students said that most of the Ben Thanh merchants showed their willingness to learn how to sell goods in cyberspace.

However, a few disdained e-commerce due to their old age.

Cuong, leader of the student group, expected support for these local vendors to help them follow the trend of selling commodities through live streams on the short video-sharing platform to beef up their incomes from now until the end of the year.
