Vietnam’s Dak Lak seeks to export durians to China without stop for phytosanitary process at border gates
The People’s Committee of Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam has proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development allow the province to directly export durians to China rather than stopping at a border gate for phytosanitary and customs declaration requirements.
Vu Duc Con, deputy director of the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and chairman of the Dak Lak Durian Association, said on Monday that the provincial administration had written to the ministry seeking approval for the proposal.
As per the prevailing regulations, trucks carrying durians for export to China via official channels must stop at border gates to complete phytosanitary and customs declaration procedures before entering China, said Con.
However, these procedures take a lot of time, leading to the quality of durians being reduced.
As such, the association and provincial department urged the Dak Lak administration to propose the ministry allow the province to conduct these steps at certified packaging facilities for export.
“If the proposal is passed, the province will establish a phytosanitary station to make it easier and faster to export durians grown in Dak Lak Province to China,” Con said.
He hopes the province will implement the plan as this year’s durian harvest season comes.
The province boasts 17 packaging facilities and 49 durian planting areas covering 2,000 hectares provided with official export codes from China.
Dak Lak aims to maintain the durian growing area in the province at over 22,000 hectares in 2025, with an annual output of 225,000 metric tons.
The province is enhancing its efforts to have 20 percent of the total durian cultivation area eligible for official export to China.
The Dak Lak Durian Association has debuted a website, hiephoisauriengdaklak.org.vn, to provide information about durians and accelerate consumption of the fruits in the upcoming harvest season.
