Amkor's $1.6 billion plant in Bac Ninh on track for October

Amkor Technology's $1.6 billion semiconductor plant in the northern province of Bac Ninh, Amkor's largest facility worldwide, is scheduled for trial production by late October 2023.

Secretary of Bac Ninh Party Committee Nguyen Anh Tuan conducted an inspection of the construction progress at Amkor Technology Vietnam's plant last week. Tuan expressed his joy at the on-schedule construction of the Amkor plant, while ensuring labour safety. “This facility will not only be Amkor's largest and most advanced plant globally, but also a model working environment for the group. Amkor plant in Bac Ninh is a key project, marking the beginning of a new trend in attracting new investment to the province,” Tuan said.

During the meeting, Kim Sung Hun, CEO of Amkor Technology Vietnam, spoke of the Amkor's beginnings and establishment in 1968 to the South Korean group's current status, operating in 12 countries around the world.

Amkor is one of the world's largest providers of outsourced semiconductor packaging, design, and test services. The firm offers deep submicron wafer fabrication, wafer probe testing, integrated circuit packaging assembly and design, and reliability testing.

Amkor Technology chose Yen Phong II-C Industrial Park (IP) for the plant's construction due to Bac Ninh's favourable investment environment, robust infrastructure, and its synchronised utility networks encompassing electricity, water, and communication. Additionally, Bac Ninh possesses the necessary conditions to nurture talent and a highly skilled technical workforce, with positive support from the provincial leadership and local authorities.

The construction of Amkor Technology Vietnam's plant is progressing according to schedule, with expected completion in September, followed by trial production in late October. The company has requested that the province direct the relevant departments to promptly relocate a landfill and complete the construction of road 285B. They also seek assistance in obtaining environmental permits, fire safety certificates, building completion permits, and layout changes.

Secretary Tuan suggested authorities should prioritise efforts to clear land, relocate waste collection sites, expedite the completion of road 285B, and promptly address any obstacles faced by Amkor. These measures are crucial to ensure the timely completion and commencement of production for the project.

Bac Ninh Party Committee held a signing ceremony with Amkor Technology in November 2021. During the event, Chairman of Bac Ninh People's Committee Nguyen Huong Giang and Ji Jong-rip, chairman of Amkor Technology, signed the agreement for the development of the semiconductor materials manufacturing, assembly, and testing project in Yen Phong II-C IP. The total investment for the project is $1.6 billion, covering an area of approximately 23 hectares.
