Vinamilk (VNM) dairy facilities certified carbon-neutral

Vietnamese dairy giant Vinamilk had its first dairy factory and farm, which are located in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam, certified carbon-neutral according to the PAS 2060 standard.

PAS 2060 is the internationally recognized specification for carbon neutrality published by the British Standards Institution.

The certification was part of a ceremony to launch the dairy firm’s pathway to dairy net zero 2050 in the province last week.

Besides, the certification made Vinamilk Vietnam’s first dairy company running both a dairy farm and a dairy factory meeting the PAS 2060 standards.

The event marked a key milestone for the firm’s pioneer journey toward sustainable development.

Vinamilk is expected to fuel the central government’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 at the COP26 Summit in the United Kingdom in 2021, via its 'Vinamilk - Pathways to Dairy Net Zero 2050' program.

Employing high technology for its dairy production chains and turning out millions of milk products each day, Vinamilk has built an action program focusing on sustainable agriculture, green production, eco-friendly logistics, and sustainable consumption.

Accordingly, the firm’s pathway includes cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent in 2027, lowering gas emissions by 55 percent by 2035, and reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

The two newly-certified dairy facilities have seen 17,560 tonnes of carbon dioxide neutralized, equivalent to some 1.7 million trees, according to a report recently released by Vinamilk.

The result demonstrates the dairy firm’s efforts in removing emissions during the production and farming operations and maintaining tree planting to protect the environment for the future.

Nguyen Dinh Minh Tam, a representative from the British Standards Institution, appreciated Vinamilk’s long-term carbon neutrality strategy.

A representative of Bureau Veritas, the UK’s leading testing, inspection, and certification firm, which granted a certificate to the Nghe An Dairy Farm, said that reducing emissions to move toward net zero emissions in the dairy industry is challenging.

The goal needs more investment in technology solutions, green energy transition, and the application of the circular economy.

“Vinamilk’s achievements will contribute to backing the target of net zero emissions for the dairy sector,” said Nguyen Viet Dung, general director of Bureau Veritas Vietnam.

To prepare for its future plan, Vinamilk has rolled out a one-million-tree fund for Vietnam since 2012, and has grown over 1.12 million plants as of late 2020.

The dairy company will continue to join hands with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to grow trees for carbon neutrality in the 2023-27 period and will implement various tree-planting programs to strengthen forests.
