Energy industry masters advanced technologies

Enterprises and research units in the field of energy, especially in the electricity industry, have taken the lead in mastering advanced technologies, achieving practical results and ensuring energy security.

According to the Science and Technology Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), businesses in the field of energy have focused on mastering foreign advanced technologies.

For example, the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) power company has completed investment in modern technology innovation, helping operate Vietnam’s electricity system at the level of the world’s advanced countries.

Science and technology units under the MoIT have also made important contributions to formulating and developing energy policies. Specifically, the Institute of Energy has provided advice on the national and local energy development planning and strategies (such as master power plans VII, VIII), renewable energy development strategy, and more.

Research institutes have conducted projects to solve scientific and technological issues, with successful applications in production. They include a project on the research, design and application of nozzle tips for use on pulverized coal-fired furnaces at Ninh Binh thermal power plant, which won the first prize at the Vietnam Science and Technology Innovation Awards. A coal loading and unloading and transportation system for coal-fired thermal power plants with a capacity of about 600 MW was put into operation at the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant, resulting in contracts worth VND1,184 billion, opening a new development direction for the domestic mechanical engineering industry, said a representative of the department.

In particular, the 500kV back-up power transformer with a capacity of 467MVA installed at Lai Chau and Son La hydropower plants is a leap in technological capacity, design and manufacturing level of domestic enterprises, ensuring conditions for the production of transformers of up to 750MVA and 500kV transformer sets with capacity up to 3x300MVA.

At present, few companies in the world can manufacture 500kV power transformers because of this product’s stringent technical requirements, and complex design and manufacturing technologies in this type of 500kV super transformers. Domestic enterprises are fully capable of providing transformers of up to 500kV for the development of the national power grid.

This scientific and technological achievement also helps Vietnam master the manufacturing and maintenance of major equipment in one of the largest hydroelectric plants in the country, ensuring the continuous and safe operation of the Son La and Lai Chau hydropower plants in particular, and contributing to national energy security in general.

The gradual localization of technology and equipment, as well as the transfer of advanced technologies in the field of energy is considered a key factor for sustainable energy development.
