Ho Chi Minh City supermarkets limit egg, beer purchases to prevent speculation
As supermarkets across Ho Chi Minh City see an increase in demand for a variety of products, many of them have started placing product purchase limits on items like eggs and beer to avoid stockpiling.
As observed by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday, Emart supermarket in Go Vap District capped the number of egg purchases at one basket of ten eggs per person per day and customers can only buy this item from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm every day.
The limit on beer products is two trays of 24 cans per customer per day.
A representative of Emart told Tuoi Tre that demand for rice, fabric softener, cooking oil, and most notably eggs and beer, all of which are being offered at discounted prices, is on the rise.
“We are controlling the purchase quantity so that all customers have a fair opportunity to buy goods at a discount,” the representative said.
“We also want to prevent mass buying for resale.”
Putting limits on discounted items is also a common practice at MM Mega Market, which currently allows each customer to purchase only five cases of beer.
“The amount limits are meant to prevent speculation,” a representative of the wholesale supermarket said.
Few manufacturers have followed the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Finance’s requirement to reduce retail prices in line with the decline of petrol prices recently.
