$2-billion Song Hau 1 thermal power plant inaugurated

The inauguration of the $2-billion Song Hau 1 thermal power plant in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang will contribute to ensuring national energy security.

On July 16, PetroVietnam organised the inauguration ceremony of the Song Hau 1 thermal power plant in Chau Thanh district.

Construction on the project started in 2015. According to the initial plan, the plant was expected to generate electricity and be connected to the national grid in 2020.

It was hoped to be put into commercial operation in 2021. However, the investors failed to reach the deadline due to many reasons.

After the problems were resolved. the plant, which has a total capacity of 1,200MW, was put into commercial operation on May 6.

To date, it has generated and supplied over two billion kWh of electricity to the national grid.

The plant is designed to generate an annual capacity of 7.2 billion kWh to the national grid, thus helping meet the demand of the southwestern region.

PetroVietnam expects to acquire up to $870 million in annual revenue, making up an important chunk of the group's total revenue, and the central and local budget revenues.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that the inauguration and operation of Song Hau 1 thermal power plant are of great significance, contributing to ensuring national energy security.

On the same day, the prime minister inspected the construction of the Song Hau 2 thermal power plant project in Mai Dam town, and the intersection between Can Tho-Ca Mau expressway and Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang expressway which run through Hau Giang.
