Green consumption campaign begins in HCM City

The 2022 Green Consumption Campaign organised by Sai Gon Giai Phong (Liberated Saigon) newspaper and Saigon Co.op, which calls on the public to give priority to sustainable products and those made by companies that are environmentally conscious, began last Sunday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Pham Van Truong, deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper, said the campaign launched in 2010 has proven effective by “helping establish new consumption habits in society that are beneficial to the environment.”

“After two years of COVID-19, the public more clearly recognises the importance of a green environment,” he said.

Le Truong Son, deputy general director of Saigon Co.op, said: “The campaign aims to improve the living environment and protect the health of yourself and your family.”

More than 100 supermarkets and 500 convenience stores across the country belonging to Saigon Co.op’s retail chains and thousands of businesses will participate in the campaign and showcase green products and production solutions.

“This is an opportunity to introduce products made by companies with a good reputation for protecting the environment and caring for consumers’ health, and energy saving and environment-friendly products,” Son said.

The organisers also encourage businesses, cooperatives and farmers to display their “one commune, one product” (OCOP) products.

The campaign includes a ‘green’ quiz with prizes being ‘green’ products, a ‘shopping marathon’ and a call to “exchange used batteries for green products,” he said.

Saigon Co.op selects businesses that meet green criteria and helps them display their products at prime locations to help consumers easily identify them.

It also offers promotions for green products, including discounts of up to 50 per cent on more than 10,000 environment-friendly products and reward points for loyal customers who bring environment-friendly bags to its stores.

In response to the city Department of Industry and Trade’s ‘Shopping Season 2022,’ Saigon Co.op is running a promotion that offers up to 60 per cent discounts on fresh and processed foods, cosmetics, cleaning products, household utensils, and apparel until July 15.
