Bac Son Tobacco develops business, ensures safe work environment

Throughout its 53-year history, the Bac Son Tobacco Company in Bac Ninh Province has always adhered to sanitary and environmental regulations in the production process. As a result, it has never experienced occupational accidents or fires.

In 2021, the cigar and cigarette manufacturer and importer treated about 6,400cu.m of wastewater in the six septic tanks it built to handle domestic wastewater by biological methods. However, due to its location in a residential area, the wastewater from restaurants and households is also discharged into the company's sewage system, putting further pressure on it.

Emissions and dust generated during production undergoes filtration and is then retained and collected in sacks. The company’s central vacuum cleaner system has been certified by the Environment Department of Bac Ninh Province.

As for the ordinary solid waste, about 542cu.m per year, Bac Son Tobacco has signed a contract for its transportation and treatment with Bac Ninh Urban Environment and Public Works Joint Stock Company.

In 2021, the company generated 0.13 tonnes of hazardous solid wastes, which was handled by the Viet Tien Environment Company Limited under a contract signed in 2020.

Internally, the company also carries out routine inspections of the sections where hazardous waste is generated to classify, collect and transport the waste to its storage area, and avoid releasing it into the environment.

In order to expand its operational scale, the company plans to build and apply environmental management systems according to ISO 14001 standard as recommended by the Vietnam National Tobacco Corporation.

Currently, the Bac Son Tobacco Company is fully compliant with regulations on environmental protection, especially by improving the working environment. The company continues to promote the efficiency of its central dust collection system in the cigarette rolling and bagging workshop in order to improve workers’ health and the environment of surrounding residential areas.

In addition to environmental protection activities, the company also pays attention to labor safety and fire prevention. It has proposed optimal, appropriate and effective measures, such as coordinating with the provincial public security forces to organize fire prevention drills, focusing on improving the quality of collective meals, ensuring food hygiene and safety, and natural disaster prevention and control. However, over the last two years, due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, these activities have been somewhat delayed. In addition, the company has participated regularly in occupational safety and health activities. As a result, even though it has been operating for many years, so far it has not recorded a single fire, explosion or occupational accident.
