Milled rice exports jump nearly 15 per cent
Cambodia’s export of milled rice to international markets reached more than 220K tonnes in the first four months of the year, marking an increase of almost 15 per cent over the same period last year.
The Cambodia Rice Federation (CFR) said in a press statement that from January to April, total exports of milled rice were 221,138 tonnes, an increase of 14.88 per cent. Exports of un-milled rice totaled at 1,648,474 tonnes. Together, milled and un-milled rice generated $516.21 million.
Lun Yeng, CRF general-secretary, said there were main factors behind the increase.
“The first factor is increased demand in Europe as the European Union stopped taxing the product in January. The second factor is that transportation costs are lower than they were in previous years. Chinese demand also remains stable. These are good indicators that exports will continue to increase,” he said.
According to the CRF, 48 companies exported milled rice to 54 countries. Exports to China, Hong Kong, and Macao reached 115,255 tonnes, equal to 52.12 per cent of the total exported, with a total value of $62.74 million.
European markets accounted for 68,555 tonnes – or 31 per cent of the total – which was worth $51.02 million. In ASEAN countries, exports reached 21,876 tonnes or 9.89 per cent, earning the Kingdom $13.90 million. The remaining rice was exported to other destinations.
