Hanoi, driving force for sales of farm produce

The capital Hanoi with nearly 10 million residents, millions of tourists and affluent middle class has in recent years become a destination for various kinds of goods, especially farm produce, from provinces and cities in the agrarian hinterland. Playing the role of a bridge in connecting buyers and sellers, Hanoi has helped build a firm position for Vietnamese farm produce in the domestic market while at the same time promoting exports.

Connecting businesses and consumers

In late November 2021, a week-long event took place at the Big C Supermarket on Tran Duy Hung Street in Hanoi’s Cau Giay District selling various kinds of fruit and other farm products grown in the capital as well as in other cities and provinces, such as Ha Giang, Bac Giang, Lao Cai, Hai Duong, Son La, Lao Cai and Bac Kan. All products sold at the event met the requirements in terms of quality, food safety and origin traceability.

Over the past two years, the Lavite Company Limited has been a participant of sales promotion programs launched by the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade. Duong Thuy An, a product distributor of the company, expects such programs will bring Lavite’s products closer to consumers.

The ALPHARCO International Joint Stock Company has also participated in sales promotion events organized by the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade. Company Director Hoang Ngoc Chien said that in 2021, the company brought to such events 37 pharmaceutical and food products of natural origin.

Nguyen Thi Sen, a member of the Hung Thich Cooperative in Son La Province, said that the cooperative participated in many trade promotion programs with Hanoi. Farm products of the cooperative are grown according to VietGAP standards and organic farming methods, with some receiving three-star and four-star One Commune One Product (OCOP) certifications. The cooperative sold large volumes of fruit and farm produce at fairs and also signed contracts for sale at various supermarket chains, including Big C.

Supply-demand connection activities bring agricultural products of other cities and provinces closer to Hanoi consumers

Boosting domestic sales

In the context of numerous pandemic-induced difficulties for exports, localities and businesses believe Hanoi’s trade promotion activities will help increase domestic sales of Vietnamese fruit and farm produce.

With nearly 10 million consumers, Hanoi is a large market for products of other cities and provinces. Tran Thi Phuong Lan, Acting Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, said that the capital’s industry and trade sector attaches great importance to supply-demand connection and trade promotion activities because they help diversify supply sources and promote production.

Hanoi will continue organizing trade promotion activities, such as week-long events selling fruit and farm produce of different cities and provinces; setting up points of sale for provincial products; creating favorable conditions for businesses to participate in fairs and exhibitions. The capital is seeking cooperation from other cities and provinces to organize these activities.

In the first half of 2022, Hanoi will help businesses in the capital participate in online trade events to sell fruit and other farm products. The capital will also provide guidance for manufacturers and suppliers on meeting distributor requirements.
