Say “no” to fake products, consumers urged

Vietnam makes hundreds of high-quality regional and national-level rural industrial products, but experts are urging intensified joint efforts by state authorities, producers and consumers to further improve the efficiency of these products’ development and stem the tide of fakes and imitations.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Agency for Regional Industry and Trade (ARID), as well as industry promotion programs of provincial departments of industry and trade have implemented practical activities to facilitate the development of notable rural industrial products. Tien Giang Province, for example, invested more than VND8.533 trillion in province-based industry promotion programs in the 2016-2020 period, including VND5.836 trillion from the provincial industry promotion budget and the remainder from the national one. The province selected 40, 20 and four outstanding products of provincial, regional and national levels, respectively, honoring and promoting high quality, prestigious products and local industrial development.

Rural industrial producers need appropriate development policies

According to provincial authorities, production and trade of such rural industrial products are hampered by manufacturers’ small-scale and scattered production, low grade technology and financing problems, limiting their ability to fulfill large orders on a regular basis. Other problems are improper investment in food safety in many rural industrial facilities, and fake and counterfeit goods that significantly affect the brand and reputation of rural industrial producers.

A producer in Hanoi’s Bat Trang Commune, a leading ceramic and pottery ware production center in northern Vietnam, told Vietnam Economic News that many products were imitated immediately after being launched and sold at a price far cheaper than the genuine ones. This discourages production facilities from investing in technology and creating new products.

Experts say authorities at all levels must adopt policies to facilitate rural industrial branding and access to preferential credit, in addition to helping these producers in workforce training, product design and market approach.

Rural industrial manufacturers are also advised to improve production capability by updating technology, proactively searching for markets, and fake goods control. They should work together to increase their operational scale and production capacity and thus better meet large and regular orders. Consumers are being urged to look for products of known origin and say “no” to poor quality, imitation products.

Authorities need to take stronger measures to control counterfeit goods and protect consumers and genuine manufacturers in order to promote rural industrial development.
