Four Vietnamese universities among top 500 in emerging economies

U.K. magazine Times Higher Education (THE) has included five Vietnamese institutions in its annual ranking of the top universities in emerging markets for 2022, four of them in the top 500.

This is the third year in a row that Vietnamese universities have made it to the list. In the latest listing, Vietnam has two more universities in the list compared to two years ago, the new entrants being the Ton Duc Thang University in HCMC and Duy Tan in Da Nang, ranked 82nd and 107th, respectively.

The other three schools in this list have either maintained or slipped in their rankings.

The Vietnam National University Hanoi dropped from 251-300 to the 301-350 group; while the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City remained in the 401-500 group. The Hanoi University of Science & Technology dropped from 301-500 to the 501+ group.

The ranking this year had 906 entries, out of which 698 in 50 countries and territories were chosen.

The choice is based on 13 performance indicators "to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments – but the weightings are recalibrated to reflect the characteristics of the emerging economy universities," the THE website proclaims.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

The results of the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022 show that China has reinforced its leading position, not only taking all five of the top positions, as was the case last year, but also ten of the top 15 (up from eight).

Peking University has swapped places with Tsinghua University to claim the number one spot.
