More than 1 million people lose job in Q1

Under the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, more than 1 million people lost their jobs in the first quarter of 2021, decreasing by 137,000 people compared with the previous quarter but increasing by 12,100 people compared with the same period last year.

According to Pham Hoai Nam, director of the Population and Labor Statistics Department, 9.1 million laborers aged 15 or older were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the first three months of the year. Some 3.1 million people saw their working hours cut, while 6.5 million people experienced a salary cut.

The agriculture, forestry and aquaculture sector was the least affected, with 7.5% of laborers in the sector affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some 16.5% of laborers in the industry and construction sector were affected by Covid-19, while the figure of the service sector was 20.4%.

Nam said the third wave of Covid-19, which started in late January, hampered the recovery of the labor market.

The average income of laborers in the first quarter of 2021 was VND6.3 million per month, increasing by VND339,000 compared with the previous quarter and VND106,000 compared with the same period last year.

Data of the General Statistics Office showed that the unemployment rate among working-age people was 2.42% in the first quarter, 0.08 percentage point higher than the same period last year.

To help the labor market recover and reduce the unemployment rate, the General Statistics Office suggested that the Government quickly implement the Covid-19 vaccine passport scheme so that the country can reopen the doors to international tourists and help the tourism and service sectors recover.
