The Central Vietnam Power Projects Management Board (CPMB) co-operated with relevant authorities to kick off the operation of the first phase of the 500kV transmission line.

The project is invested by National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), a subsidiary of Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) Group.

The project’s construction was started in April 2018 and spans the central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An.

It consists of two 500kV dual-circuit power lines of 39.6km in length, with 219 postpositions.

CPMB is co-operating with local authorities in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An to deal with the remaining difficulties in land clearance in order to complete the entire project in May 2021.

In June 2017, the Ministry of Planning and Investment granted an investment certificate for the investor. The project's capital was estimated at $2.8 billion.

The project will be developed under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) format and have an installed capacity of 1,200MW, produced by two units of 600MW each. The electricity generated from this plant will be sold to EVN for 25 years.

According to the initial plan, the construction of the plant should have started by the end of 2017, but failed due to investors' difficulties in arranging capital.

Along with Nghi Son 2, Nghi Son 1 Thermal Power Station is one of the two plants of Nghi Son Power Centre, which belongs to the national electricity development plan for the 2006-2015 period.

The station was completed and put into commercial operation in the second quarter of 2014, contributing to ensuring a safe and economical electricity supply for the North-Central region, especially Nghi Son Economic Zone.
