Phu Quoc becomes Vietnam’s first island city
The Kien Giang government on January 8 held a ceremony to announce the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee’s resolution to establish Phu Quoc City and its wards, making Phu Quoc the first island city in Vietnam.

According to the resolution, which took effect on January 1, Phu Quoc City has been established on the basis of the entire natural area and population of 179,480 people of Phu Quoc Province.
The city has two wards—An Thoi and Duong Dong—and seven communes—Bai Thom, Cua Can, Cua Duong, Duong To, Ganh Dau, Ham Ninh and Tho Chau.
Of these, Duong Dong Ward has been established on the basis of the entire natural area and population of more than 60,400 people of Duong Dong Town, while Hon Thom Commune with 4,610 people and An Thoi Town with nearly 37,500 people have been merged to form An Thoi Ward.
According to the Kien Giang government, Phu Quoc will be developed under the economic special zone model. The Government has set a target to develop Phu Quoc into an island city, a high-end tourism and service center and a science and technology hub of the country and Southeast Asia.
This year, the city aims to reach an agro-forestry-fishery production value of more than VND4.5 trillion, and industry-construction at VND16.7 trillion, up 3.32% and 9.76%, respectively, over last year.
It also expects to mobilize a total investment of VND25 trillion, collect VND3.4 trillion for the city’s budget and welcome two million tourists.
Tourism will be the key economic sector of the city.
