Gambling industry attempts rebound
As the gambling industry attempts to recover from the impact of Covid-19, the Ministry of Commerce has called for game-related companies in Cambodia to participate in the upcoming Global Game Exhibition G-Star, a games industry show hosted by the Republic of Korea which is scheduled to be held virtually next month.
The ROK is the fourth biggest games market in the world and G-Star is the biggest games industry show in the ROK.
According to a ministry announcement received by The Post on Sunday, ASEAN Korea Centre (AKC) will participate in the Global Game Exhibition G-Star from November 17-20.
The ministry said: “The AKC will invite ten game companies per each member state to participate in the online B2B meeting. The programme is expected to enhance the global competitiveness of ASEAN game companies and to provide business opportunities for ASEAN and Korean game companies.
“The Ministry of Commerce would like to invite all interested entrepreneurs, producers, traders, service providers and investment companies whose business activities are related to the above-mentioned industry to participate,” it said.
Ros Phearun, the deputy director of the ministry’s General Department of Financial Industry told The Post recently that as of September 27, there are eight casinos reopening in Sihanoukville and two others in Phnom Penh and Poipet town, Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet town. More reopening will follow in Svay Rieng province’s Bavet town.
Phearun said: “The casinos are limited in operating and must be clean, and ensure the safety of staffs and guests. We expect there are more reopenings coming soon.”
According to the Mey Vann, the director-general of the ministry’s financial industry department, all casino owners in Cambodia wanted to resume their operations. He said Cambodia is home to over 100 casinos.
