Crypto smartphone sales exceed targets

UK-based Electroneum (ETN), a cryptocurrency, said its partnership with Cellcard to sell smartphones in the Kingdom has proven very successful.

In late January, Cellcard and Electroneum announced a partnership to sell one million smartphones to Cambodians at affordable prices.

The partnership allowed users of ETN tokens to top up their mobile phone through the ETN App, using ETN Rewards. With Cellcard, users can also top up their mobile phone airtime and data with ETN crypto.

According to an ETN announcement last week, this is the first time a blockchain start-up is working directly with a mobile network operator.

As a result of their agreement, the Electroneum crypto smartphones that Cellcard ordered flew off the shelves in just under two hours, it said.

“Cellcard ordered 250 smartphones from us based on the number of our mobile devices they estimated would be sold in one month. They based their forecast on the sale statistics of other brands.

“Cellcard executives were pleasantly surprised to see the smartphones fly off the shelves within two hours and have immediately placed a new order to increase their stock of our crypto phone,” he said.

According to Electroneum CEO and founder Richard Ells, mobile top-ups have been going very well for his companies in seven countries – Cambodia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, and Uganda.

“We have registered nearly 60,000 top-ups in those countries so far, which are such great numbers that we are now ready to go live with this service in 140 countries in the coming days,” he said.

Cellcard launched a promotional sale of the M1 Electroneum smartphone with the built-in ETN App that gives up to $3 a month in ETN that can be used for mobile top-ups and to purchase everyday items in several countries around the world.
