Live pig prices surge on dwindling supply
The price of live pigs is rising steeply on the local market, with multiple localities seeing prices surge to VND87,000 per kilogram, or twice the normal price, the local media reported.
In the northern market, the prices of live pigs range from VND86,000 to VND87,000 per kilogram in Thai Binh, Lang Son, Hung Yen and Ha Nam provinces, while Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc and Thai Nguyen are seeing live pigs sell for VND84,000-VND85,000 per kilogram.
Live pigs in some other provinces and Hanoi City are being sold at a lower price, reaching some VND80,000 per kilogram.
The southern region has also faced a hike in live pig prices. Many provinces in the Mekong Delta region, including Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang and Soc Trang, have reported a record price for live pigs, at VND75,000 per kilogram.
In Dong Nai, the country’s largest livestock farming province, the price of live pigs soared to VND88,000 per kilogram and is expected to continue to rise.
In HCMC, the live pig price remains fixed at VND67,000 per kilogram. Pork prices fell by VND15,000 at Hoc Mon Wholesale market in the city on December 10.
Also, the prices of live pigs rose by VND2,000 per kilogram in Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands region.
The highest prices of live pigs were reported at VND70,000-VND74,000 per kilogram in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.
The price was raised by VND4,000 per kilogram to VND72,000 in the Central Highlands province of Daklak.
The price of live pigs has for long years hovered around VND40,000 a kilo, a level slightly higher than the production cost. Early last year, the pig price tumbled due to oversupply, sometimes hitting as low as VND25,000 a kilo, but the price recovered towards the year's end before surging as the widespread African swine fever has caused the pig herd to dwindle.
