Automobile sales dip despite promotional programs

November saw local automobile sales falling 3% from the same period last year to more than 29,800 units, though automobile firms have launched multiple promotional programs.

In the last months of previous years, the demand for automobiles tended to be high. However, the situation changed this year.

More than 30,500 cars were sold in November last year, up 23% over the same month in 2017, according to a report by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association.

The report also showed that over 289,000 automobiles found buyers in the January-November period of this year, marking an increase of 14% year-on-year.

Sales of locally assembled cars dipped 13%, while the number of completely-built-up cars sold in the local market surged 98% in the period.

Meanwhile, the General Statistics Office reported that the country spent nearly US$6.8 billion on automobile imports, soaring 195.2% versus the same period last year.

Local automobile firms have raced to launch their promotional programs to attract customers.

For example, Audi Vietnam will waive the registration fee of VND200 million for customers buying Audi Q5 Design quattro and Audi Q5 Sport quattro cars until January 22 next year. The fee is VND300 million for those buying Audi Q7 quattro cars.

Truong Hai Auto Corporation has also offered discounts of VND100-300 million for buyers of BMWs and VND150 million for Mercedes C-class and GLC automobiles.

As for the Vios, Corolla Altis, Innova and Fortuner models, buyers will receive a registration fee waiver of VND100 million.
