Kingdom set to host Asean banking meet

Cambodia will host the 22nd Asean Banking Conference and the 49th Asean Banking Council Meeting, Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) president In Channy said on Thursday.

Channy told The Post that the event will be organised by the ABC and will be held from November 25-27 with the participation of more than 400 investors and bank sector insiders.

This will be the Kingdom’s first time hosting the Asean Banking Conference and the second time for the Asean Banking Council Meeting, he said.

This year’s event will be held under the theme Asean Connectivity 2025 – a brave new world of digital innovation for one Asean banking sector.

“We plan to talk about digital infrastructure, global payments through technology and regulations,” he said, adding that bank liquidity in Asean countries will also be on the agenda.

“It is very important for the Asean framework to enhance connectivity in the Asean bloc’s banking sectors so that they are mutually financially supportive and for the [Kingdom] to see progress, economic development and attract investors to Cambodia,” said Channy.

In 2016, the 21st Asean Banking Conference and the 46th Asean Banking Council Meeting were held in Thailand.

As of the second quarter of this year, there are 44 commercial banks, 15 specialised banks, 74 microfinance institutions, seven microfinance deposit-taking institutions, 254 rural credit operators, 15 leasing companies and 16 payment service providers operating in the Kingdom, a report from the National bank of Cambodia said.
