International fishery exhibition opens

Vietfish 2019, an international fishery exhibition, was opened at District 7's Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in HCM City on Thursday by the Viet Nam Association for Seafood Exporters and Producers.

The exhibition, which has been held 20 times, features more than 370 stalls of businesses from 15 countries such as Viet Nam, Korea, Japan and Germany, providing a place for foreign and domestic businesses to network and keep up to date with the latest developments in the industry.

Ngo Van Ich, chairman of the association, said the market for Viet Nam's fishery products is growing quickly, with a wide variety of products and services.

Phung Duc Tien, deputy minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the fishery sector is a key contributor to Viet Nam's economic growth and agricultural exports. Viet Nam's seafood is highly regarded by international consumers, he said, adding that opportunities for trade promotion and facilitation are important.

Several conferences discussing areas such as traceability and increasing the value of seafood products are also being held.

The exhibition will run until August 31.

Viet Nam has exported seafood products to more than 170 markets through around 600 processing and exporting businesses, creating jobs for five million workers, making the country one of the world's biggest seafood exporters.
