U.S. President supports trade, energy cooperation with Vietnam: spokesperson
U.S. President Donald Trump, at a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, had voiced his support for the strategic cooperation between Vietnam and the United States, especially in the trade and energy sectors, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang.
At a press conference today, July 4, Hang said PM Phuc had met with many leaders of countries and international organizations on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, including U.S. President Trump, the local media reported.
At the meeting, U.S. President Trump threw his support behind the cooperation with Vietnam and asked for the enhancement of balanced and mutually-beneficial trade ties between the two countries.
He also hailed Vietnam’s determination and drastic action against falsification of origins of goods and trade fraud, Hang added.
At the press meeting, Hang also said Vietnam will adopt preventive measures against origin fraud involving steel products, in response to the U.S.’ announcement of steep tariffs of up to 456% on certain steel products from Vietnam.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade also warned local steelmakers over stringent safeguard measures adopted by investigative agencies in steel importing countries, so local firms need to map out appropriate business strategies and switch to using domestic materials or from other legal sources, Hang said.
She added relevant agencies will discuss with the U.S. side to guarantee legal rights and interests of local firms, on par with Vietnamese laws and the World Trade Organization’s requirements.
