Viet Nam values partnership with US: spokesperson

Viet Nam sees developing its comprehensive partnership with the US as important, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said on Friday.

The spokesperson was answering questions from reporters about Viet Nam’s reaction to US President Donald Trump’s recent negative remarks on Viet Nam-US trade ties.

She added that bilateral ties had seen good progress in all aspects, particularly in economic-trade-investment relations.

“With the view that the two economies can supplement each other, Viet Nam wants to promote free and fair economic-trade-investment ties with the US on the basis of mutual benefits,” Hang said.

She said that in that spirit, Viet Nam had made many efforts to improve the trade balance between the two countries, by increasing the import of products which are of the US’s strength and needed by Viet Nam, bettering the investment and business environment, creating favourable conditions for US firms which want to operate in Viet Nam, and encouraging Vietnamese firms to do business in the US.

According to the spokesperson, Viet Nam has implemented numerous measures to curb and prevent trade fraud and the export of foreign goods disguised as Viet Nam-made goods to other markets.

Viet Nam and the US regularly held discussions through available mechanisms such as the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement to form a long-term co-operative strategy, further intensify bilateral economic, trade and investment relations and address arising problems, Hang said.
