S.Korea eyes agricultural development
The Departments of Science and Technology of Can Tho City and Soc Trang Province have signed cooperation deals with South Korea’s Chuncheon Bio-industry Foundation (CBF) to develop and commercialize agricultural and medical products.
Speaking at the signing ceremony taking place at Saigon Innovation Hub in HCMC today, June 18, leaders of the Mekong Delta localities and CBF said that the cooperation efforts are intended to churn out high-value agricultural products and secure a supply chain for their localities.
Vu Thi Hieu Dong, director of Soc Trang’s Department of Science and Technology, noted that Soc Trang has many products with potential, such as the Vinh Chau purple onion. However, the province has yet to conduct proper research on promoting its products.
To produce high-value items such as functional food or precious bio extracts, the province needs more capital and cooperation from scientists. Through cooperation with CBF, the department aims to turn purple onions into a practical product that will be sold worldwide, Dong said.
Truong Hoang Phuong, deputy director of Can Tho’s Department Science and Technology, remarked that the department is cooperating with many research agencies at home and aboard. CBF will support the department with technology applications to study potential farm and medical products.
