GDT begins transport tax collection for 2019

The General Department of Taxation (GDT) has begun collecting transportation taxes for this year on June 1 and will continue until November 30, according to a notice dated May 31.

“Taxes paid at the taxation unit or at branches of commercial banks shall be deemed income for the locality in which they are paid,” said the notice.

Authorities will begin to inspect and punish vehicles owners who have not paid the tax as of January 1, 2020, it said.

GDT has collected some $1.43 million in fines from more than 6,000 vehicles with unpaid taxes last year, according to an announcement on Wednesday.

Road tax is not imposed on public service vehicles such as motorbikes, ambulances, military vehicles, police cars, agricultural vehicles, embassy cars and those used by international organisations.

GDT collected over $2.19 billion in tax revenue last year from various streams, exceeding its target by over $274 million or up 13.37 per cent from the same period in 2017.

In an attempt to combat corruption and ensure transparency, GDT has allowed taxpayers to pay taxes via Acleda Bank and Canadia Bank since 2013 and has recently made payments possible at Vattanac Bank, Cambodia Public Bank and ANZ Royal Bank.
