Ha Noi expects to be new production location for iPhone makers

Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ha Noi Nguyen Duc Chung expects a Chinese group to bring its iPhone production line to the capital city.

The information was shared by Vu Tien Loc, Chairman of the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), during a meeting between the Prime Minister’s task force group and the Ha Noi People’s Committee on Thursday.

According to Loc, in the context of the accelerating US-China trade war, there is a wave of factories shifting production from China to Viet Nam, in which the northern region and Ha Noi are top destinations for investors.

Earlier, Apple’s AirPods assembler, Chinese firm GoerTek, confirmed plans to shift production out of China to avoid the escalating trade war between the US and China. The producer has notified suppliers that it intends to move production of the wireless earphones to Viet Nam, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

Cheng Uei, which supplies chargers and connectors for iPhones and Android smartphones, also said it was considering bringing some production back to Taiwan and Southeast Asia because of the trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

The group is evaluating new facilities in Thailand, Viet Nam and the Philippines.
