Leading housing developer mulls first skyscraper

Is Cambodia’s most famous borey developer venturing into skyscrapers and commercial office space?

Local developer Borey Peng Houth Group has won a lot of accolades for its residential housing projects over the years, including its third consecutive golden trophy as Best Developer at this year’s PropertyGuru Cambodia Property Awards 2018.

The company has developed some of the most acclaimed boreys (gated residential communities) and innovative housing projects, and last year broke ground on its first two retail malls. But concept shots posted this month on the developer’s Facebook page suggest that the famous residential developer may be looking to cross over into commercial real estate.

An animated promotional video posted on the Facebook page appears to show a 20-storey twin-tower skyscraper on the site of the group’s mixed-use development in ING City, a planned satellite city south of the capital. A skybridge connects the two glass towers, one of which has a helipad on its roof.

The building is linked to the developer’s Star Diamond project, a 40-hectare mixeduse development launched last year that will include borey housing, condominiums and the two-storey Diamond Plaza Mall. The project is located south of the capital along Hun Sen Boulevard, also known as Street 60m.

It is rumoured that one tower in the skyscraper will be allocated to condo units, while the other will consist of highend office space including Borey Peng Houth Group’s new headquarters.

When reached by phone, a representative of Borey Peng Houth Group’s marketing department, declined to comment on the building depicted in the video, but confirmed that the company does have plans to build a tower at the site depicted in the illustration.

“The company does have a plan to construct a tall building along Street 60m, but I do not know how many storeys it will be, what it will look like, its purpose or even when construction might kick off,” the representative said. “Once the plan is clear the company will announce it.”
