Skilled labour in demand for Lao markets
Employers from both public and private sectors in Laos believe shortages in the labour force in general is less an issue that of skilled labour, which remains higher in demand than supply in the country.
Senior managers from various public and private companies were invited to a panel discussion session on human resource issues in Vientiane last weekend as a platform for exchanging experiences and ideas on opportunities and challenges in human resource management.
One of the invited panelists from a private company said that her company does not face the shortage of labour but noted demand for skilled labour was on the rise.
We have to re-train our newly-recruited employees at the actual workplaces because they have graduated from schools with theory only, she admitted.
Managing Director of Enterprise & Development Consultants Company Limited (EDC) Ms Thiphaphone Phetmany who was co-host of a panel discussion session told Vientiane Times that the forum was a platform to answer questions for the members of public who are curious about labour issues.
We are already integrated with Asean Economic Community (AEC), so the member of public may be curious about the management of human resource, especially skilled labour, in Laos, she said.
She also noted that the demand for ski lled labour is high because both public and private sectors are keen to recruit well-trained employees to work with them for specialised tasks.
Laos is one of the Asean countries that is now experiencing the steady growth in soc io-economic development meaning qualified and skilled workers are in ever-greater demand.
Meanwhile Deputy Secretary General from Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) Ms Souphaphone Khamsennam also said that the panel discussion was a milestone for public and private sectors in Laos to gain better mutual understanding on the role of human resource management.
Nowadays, the demand for human resources is on the rise. In addition, the skilled workers in SMEs sector are now well-equipped with professional skills but they have to enhance their skills at the SMEs workshops and seminars as well, she said.
The panel discussion on human resource was co-hosted by the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI), Enterprise & Development Consultants Company Limited (EDC) and Karuna Software, and financially supported by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
