Hydropower plant’s second turbine starts generating power

The Trung Son hydropower plant’s second turbine, in the central province of Thanh Hoa, began generating electricity for the national grid on Tuesday.

The plant’s first turbine became operational a little more than a month ago.

Located in Quan Hoa District’s Trung Son Commune, the plant is the country’s first hydropower project, built with a loan from the World Bank.

Trung Son Hydropower Co Ltd, a subsidiary of EVN Power Generation Corporation 2, is the investor of the project, which has a total of four turbines with a combined capacity of 260MW.

Once the plant is fully operational, it is expected to provide more than 1 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid every year, as well as check flooding in areas downstream of Ma River.

Construction of the plant began in November 2012. All four turbines are scheduled to become operational in the second quarter of 2017, as per details put up on Trung Son’s website.
