Tailoring shirts via Vietnamese-made app
Two Vietnamese entrepreneurs have created an app that helps create custom shirts with built-in measuring technology so that men can shop for tailored shirts at home, with no need for a tailor or tape measure.
The UKYS app is the brainchild of young couple Lam Nguyen and Pauline Tran, and is the result of an interest in fashion coupled with a background in IT over the last ten years.
With UKYS, male users can collect their own measurements with which to tailor a shirt at home, before placing orders with tailors online.
The startup is a unique combination of advanced technology and conventional tailoring, making it simple to take measurements from home using the camera in any iOS device.
Using the photos taken as per the app's instructions, UKYS converts the data into comprehensive body metrics as would a normal tailor.
Choices about fabric and shirt details are then made available to users who are also able to customize collars and cuffs. Upon receipt of all measurement data and the user's style preferences, the production team, comprising a 15-year-old family tailoring business in the UK, then tailors the shirts according to the information captured by the app.
“We started two years ago. The app was created and developed over a one year period. It was then tested on thousands of body types to design the optimal algorithm. We believe that UKYS is a new approach to tailoring that enables skillful tailors to supply a service to people they have never met,” Pauline Tran said about her startup project.
The app is presently only compatible with iOS devices. The application first attracted attention on crowd-funding website Indiegogo (US).
