Nojima-backed electronics retailer to be fined for having scantily-clad saleswomen

Electronics retailer Tran Anh (TAG), in which Japanese consumer electronics retailer Nojima Corporation holds 31 per cent, is going to be heavily fined for allegedly having its sales women wear only bikinis on the job.

Nguyen Thanh Phong, head inspector of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told newspaper An ninh Thu do that TAG violated regulations on advertising and would receive the heaviest of fine.

On April 28, photos appeared on social networking sites of saleswomen wearing bikinis purportedly talking to customers at the Tran Anh store on Pham Hung street in Hanoi.

Answering the question of newswire Vnexpress, Ngo Thanh Dat, marketing director of TAG, said the company, in cooperation with a public relations partner, was considering shooting a sex education video series targeting young people.

Dat said TAG chose the time where the store was least crowded to shoot a demo video, and based on the quality of this demo video, would decide whether to go ahead with the plan. But they did not expect that photos would be taken and posted on social media.

Phong said that the department was investigating the matter together with the People’s Committee of Nam Tu Liem district where the store is located. Phong said the sex ed explanation was not acceptable.

TAG currently has 24 stores, two of which to be opened soon, selling consumer electronics as well as household appliances. In 2015 the company earned revenue of VND3.35 trillion ($150.3 million) and net profit of VND14.6 billion ($655,100).
