New condo and mall development on Sothearos

For weeks, construction workers have been busy clearing the land across from Rose Condo, taking down and setting back up a long row of sheet metal fencing that partially obscures the view from the road. With the exception of two wide gates that allow heavy machinery to pass through, most of the development remains barren, without signage.

The large plot of land is a prime area of development that has slowly started to take off after Aeon Mall opened in 2014. While it has been overgrown and quiet until recently, workers on site claim they are preparing for a large development.

Sameoun, the construction supervisor of the project, said the project belongs to Kith Meng, CEO of Royal Group. According to him, the development will consist of a 45-storey condominium building with an adjacent mall. Construction is set to begin in full swing after Khmer New Year.

Mark Hanna, Royal Group’s CFO, could only confirm that “the plot of land is ours.”

However, Hanna could not provide details about the construction on the property, saying he was unsure of what was being built. Royal Group’s business development manager could not be reached for comment.

Long Dimanche, City Hall’s spokesman, said that he was not aware of any proposed projects on that plot of land.

“[We] haven’t received any proposals for construction, so we don’t know if there’s any actual project being developed there,” he said.

He added that the municipal cadastral survey also had no knowledge of any major construction plans in that area.
