Vietnam Airlines reports superior performance in 2015

The national carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) took in revenues of VND69.3 trillion (US$3.16 billion) in 2015, with VND1.4 trillion ($63.9 million) in pre-tax profits, which was 129 per cent higher than its set target.

The figures were released at a review conference held in Ha Noi on December 30.

Reports presented at the conference showed that the national flag carrier conducted over 127,500 flights in 2015, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.5 per cent.

Speaking at the conference, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang praised the carrier for its positive performance in 2015, affirming that Vietnam Airlines' superior year-end results significantly contributed to the transport sector's achievements in 2015.

Even though it faced numerous challenges due to fluctuating foreign exchange rates and poor domestic airport infrastructure, Vietnam Airlines fulfilled its key objectives and created breakthroughs in reforming its fleet and improving its quality of service.

Vietnam Airlines also made progress in restructuring and equitisation. After becoming a joint stock company on April 1, 2015, Vietnam Airlines worked hard to seek strategic investors. It has largely completed negotiations for share purchase contracts with strategic investors.

The VNA had divested VND819 billion ($37.4 million) from its non-core businesses during the 2012 to 2015 period.

In 2016, the carrier is set to transport 19.2 million passengers, an increase of 10.6 per cent against 2015. It is also expected to post revenues of VND77.8 trillion ($3.55 billion) and a pre-tax profit of over VND2.3 trillion ($105 million).

Further, Vietnam Airlines officially announced the establishment of the Vietnam Airport Ground Service (VIAGS) Co., Ltd, which merged with Noi Bai, Da Nang and Tan Son Nhat International Airport Ground Service Enterprises.

The formation of VIAGS is one of the key policies in the corporation's restructuring plan, as approved by the Prime Minister to improve its competitiveness and business efficiency, thus contributing to the country's socio-economic development.

The same day, the signing ceremony was held for the Tripartite Coordination Instrument between Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).
