PM says funds needed for rice storage, drying
Prime Minister Hun Sen has called for more investment in rice storage facilities and drying machines in a bid to increase the country’s rice export capacity.
Speaking at the Cambodia Rice Forum yesterday, he said the government was negotiating with China for loans to construct rice storage warehouses, which would allow millers to purchase more paddy rice from farmers. He also called for Chinese assistance in purchasing drying machines to help process paddy rice.
Cambodia exported 538,396 tonnes of milled rice in 2015, a 39 per cent increase over the previous year.
The figure fell short, however, of the prime minister’s long-stated export goal of 1 million tonnes a year by 2015.
